Empowering Tomorrow's Changemakers
Alaska Civics Academy is where young minds meet the future of governance. We believe that informed citizens make for a healthier democracy. Our non-partisan, evidence-based programs provide a unique platform for young voters to educate themselves on the intricacies of local and federal governance.
With a curriculum designed to demystify the political process, Alaska Civics Academy ensures that participants understand how their voices can impact public policy. Through workshops, internships, and community forums, we highlight important federal legislation like the “George Floyd Act” and the “For the People Act”, which strive for social justice and strengthening voting rights.
Alaskans Take A Stand and Stand UP Alaska, as part of the Alaska Coalition for Justice, are committed to enhancing public safety in Alaska. Following a three-year struggle with the Mayor, police chief, and police union, our coalition successfully advocated for the adoption of body cameras by all uniformed police officers in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. The next objective of the Coalition is to establish a Citizens Review Board for police oversight and implement a database to monitor incidents of misconduct. Additionally, we aim to incorporate aspects of the HEART program from Durham, NC, into our initiatives in Anchorage. The HEART program, which stands for Healing Engagement and Response Team, offers a community-based approach to mental health crises, effectively de-escalating situations and reducing police interventions. We are convinced that introducing similar programs in Alaska will result in more efficient and compassionate responses to mental health emergencies.
Shining Light on Critical Issues
The Light Brigade project is a beacon of hope in dark times. Our community-led initiative uses public art to convey messages that matter, from activism to promoting community resilience. Blanketing cityscapes with illuminated messages, the Light Brigade's temporality serves as a visual reminder of the importance of being heard and seen.
With the support of the community and allies, Light Brigade has touched upon themes from Supreme Court Nominees to a GOTV message, advocating for equal access and recognition. Our motto, "Illuminate - Educate - Advocate," speaks volumes about our mission to raise awareness and inspire action.
A Lifeline for the Community
Fighting for equitable access to healthcare, Medicaid/Healthcare for All is a grassroot coalition advocating for comprehensive healthcare coverage as a human right. Our work extends across local, state, and federal levels, calling for legislation like Medicaid Expansion/Access to Healthcare in various states and the Federal Medicaid for All Act.
In partnership with Black People, Indigenous People, and the LGBTQ community, we highlight the intersectionality of healthcare disparities, with a vision to create a system that truly cares for everyone. Through community health fairs, educational events, and policy analysis, we're working towards a healthier and more just society.
#HealthcareForAll
Our organizations understand that without good health, it is difficult for individuals to achieve their full potential and contribute positively to society. That's why we advocate for policies and programs that promote equitable access to healthcare for all.
We believe that every person, regardless of their background or financial status, deserves the right to live a healthy life. By promoting healthcare as a human right, we are taking a stand against injustices and inequalities in our healthcare system.
We understand the struggles faced by individuals who cannot afford or access necessary healthcare, and we are dedicated to making a change. Through our initiatives and partnerships, we strive to make sure that no one in Alaska is left behind when it comes to their health.
Join us in our mission to ensure that every member of our community has the dignity of good health. Together, let's take a stand for healthcare as a human right and create a healthier and more equitable Alaska for all.
Creating Homes, Restoring Hope
House Everyone is on a mission to end homelessness through compassionate advocacy and sustainable housing solutions. Our focus extends to individuals and families, regardless of race, wealth, or background, with special attention to the needs of indigenous peoples. Working on issues as diverse as affordable housing and policy reforms, we aim to dismantle systemic barriers to housing security.
With the proven Home First model and partnerships in health, employment, and education sectors, House Everyone continues to lead the fight for the right to safe and dignified shelter. Our legislative push includes campaigns for affordable housing and social safety net reforms in multiple states and at the federal level.
As a collective voice amplifying the commitment of each organization, we stand firm in our belief that change is possible, and action at all levels of government is essential. Join us in shaping a future where our voices are not just heard but also heeded, where communities thrive and justice is for all. Together, we can build a better world.
As an organization devoted to equality and inclusivity, we strongly uphold the belief that every individual should have the freedom to love and be loved without facing discrimination or fear. We invite you to join us in our unwavering dedication to advocate for and safeguard the rights of the LGBTQ community in Alaska. Over the past two years, our collaborative efforts with OutNorth Theatre have culminated in the successful staging of the D Street Pride festival. This event, held during Anchorage's First Friday celebration, has rapidly emerged as the kickoff for Pride festivities in the city.
In partnership with esteemed organizations such as the Alaska Black Caucus, NAACP, Hmong Organization, Pacific Community of Alaska, Black Lives Matter Alaska, and the Juneteenth Anchorage committee, we are dedicated to advancing racial equality across every facet of society. Our approach includes fostering community dialogues, conducting educational workshops, and leading advocacy efforts aimed at eradicating systemic racism. We endeavor to build a more equitable and just future for all Alaskans. Part of our mission involves supporting local entities that offer vital resources and services to BIPOC communities, including the Alaska Native Heritage Center and Umoja Coworking Space. Together, we are committed to forging a more inclusive and fair society for everyone.
We recognize that Alaska has a rich history and culture shaped by its diverse Indigenous communities, and we are committed to advocating for their rights and sovereignty. We support initiatives such as the recognition of Indigenous languages as official languages in Alaska, protecting sacred sites, and promoting traditional knowledge and practices. Our partnership with organizations like Native Movement allows us to amplify the voices of Indigenous people and bring attention to issues affecting their communities. We believe that honoring and respecting Indigenous sovereignty is crucial for a truly equitable and unified Alaska.
